The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios in Lamego is located on the hill of St. Stephen, being a major pilgrimage church in Portugal.
From Avenida Dr. Alfredo de Sousa, in the center of Lamego, there is a vast staircase that rises to the top of the hill, up to the shrine. Erected in 1750 to its conclusion ends only in 1905 and replaced the chapel dedicated to St. Stephen.
Over time, the devotion to St. Stephen was declining and was growing devotion to the virgin, who was the target of the prayers of those who suffered from ailments and needed help, which led to the devotion to Nossa Senhora dos Remédios (Lady of Remedies).
The Sanctuary and the long stairway of 686 steps going up the hill, is surrounded by a dense forest, the Park of St. Stephen which gives a mystical air to the set. The park is a very pleasant place with several resting places.
Along the stairway found several levels, where we find several works of art. Sculptures on several grounds, fountains, obelisks, tile panels and a chapel are some of the works that you can find.
The view of Lamego from the shrine is formidable. This is one of the must-visit places in the region.
The temple has in its facade features the Baroque and Rococo. In its construction was employed granite stone.
Inside, lying on the main altar is the image of Our Lady of Remedies, carved in wood, lying beside her three stained glass windows with images of Our Lady of Conception, Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Annunciation.
